Post Modern Art

Image
Forming in the middle of the 20 th   century, Postmodern art was said to burst onto the artistic scene sometime between the 1960s and 1970s. This movement replaced Modernism as the primary artistic style at the time, and was viewed as a form of art with no standard guidelines that dictated the practice. Postmodern art stretched over two decades, coming to an end in around the 1990s when other artistic styles that had borrowed characteristics from Postmodernism began to develop. Existing as a body of art that incorporated different movements, Postmodern art borrowed aspects from a variety of artistic practices when creating artworks. The Postmodernism era described a form of art in which artists were able to truly express what they thought and felt, with pieces from this period typically characterized by complete freedom from politics and other societal influences. Postmodernism was  an unstable mix of the theatrical and theoretical . It was visually thrilling, a multifa...

Kleine Welten II, 1922, Wassily Kandinsky Wassily Wassilyevich Kandinsky was a Russian painter and art theorist. Kandinsky is generally credited as one of the pioneers of abstraction in western art, possibly after Hilma af Klint. Born in Moscow, he spent his childhood in Odessa, where he graduated at Grekov Odessa Art school. I chose this painting as like the artist the appealing display of abstract art speaks in volumes, Kandinsky is one of the first pioneers of abstract art. bringing music as his influence on the canvas. When I look at this portrait, I feel that maybe he was listening to something classical. The tones are smooth at first although the grey shading bring another perspective. Stilleben mit Bordeuauxflasche  (‘Still Life with a Bordeaux Bottle’, 1919) by Juan Gris It is said that artist of the Early Modern Era brought forth a style of painting from their imagination, although this painting gives the impression of the canvas being made from wood....

Preferences and Perspectives - The Romantic Era

The Nightmare  (1781) by Henry Fuseli;  Although the woman is enveloped in bright light, Fuseli suggests that the light cannot pierce the nightmarish realm of the human mind. The relationship between the woman, the incubus, and the mare is not explicit and therefore remains suggestive, emphasizing the frightening possibilities. The Nightmare  frightened and shocked its audience when exhibited at London’s Royal Academy. It was unlike anything the public was used to seeing, as the subject matter was not taken from the bible or a moment in history, nor was it created for the sake of moralizing the viewer. Upper Fall of the Reichenbach: Rainbow  (1810) by J. M. W. Turner Turner expressed the notion of the “sublime” in his paintings, a concept postulated by the philosopher Edmond Burke, where he depicted the feeling one sensed when experiencing the overwhelming force and grandeur of nature. Caspar David Friedrich   Wanderer above the Sea of Fog  (c. 1818)...

Classical Art

Image
Classical Art encompasses the cultures of Greece and Rome and endures as the cornerstone of Western civilization. Including innovations in painting, sculpture, decorative arts, and architecture, Classical Art pursued ideals of beauty, harmony, and proportion, even as those ideals shifted and changed over the centuries. While often employed in propagandistic ways, the human figure and the human experience of space and their relationship with the gods were central to Classical Art. cited  Greek and Roman Art and Architecture | TheArtStory Claude Lorrain 1680 The artist captures gathering of the towns people while incorporating skyline and the splendor of its beauty as it reflects off the water. The elements of line and depth of the shadows give the impression that the day is coming to an end with the sun setting in the distance. I find that the portrait captures the eye with all its elegance, the child is being served by several female attendants who appear to have her livelihood in their hands. She is certainly the center of attention, it's like she has a captive audience. The setting is obviously showing us that she is of a royalty of sorts, the clothing alone depicts that she certainly is more than just a common folk. I find it interesting that the artist also included himself in the portrait.  The portrait/painting is not necessarily something I would purchase, although I do admire its qualities  Some of his famous artworks include  The Supper at Emmaus  (1618 – 1623),  The Surrender of Breda  (1635),  Portrait of Juan de Pareja  (1650),  Portrait of Innocent X  (1650), and  Las Meninas  (1656), the latter of which is one of the most famous artworks by the artist due to the strategic rendering of compositional elements like space, color, perspectiv...

The Annunciation The angel Gabriel visits the Virgin Mary to announce to her that she will be the mother of God. At this moment, Jesus Christ is miraculously conceived, and God becomes flesh and blood. The Annunciation is des cribed in  Luke 1:26–38  and pictured here in a  fresco by Fra Angelico  at the Convent of San Marco in Florence. From the 1520, some Renaissance artists took a different path from what had been established as traditional for more than a century. They were the Mannerist artists. They chose to elongate the human figures to the point of absurdity and twist them in strange positions. They also abandoned the simpler order and perfectly symmetrical composition preferred by preceding artists and instead they crowded asymmetrical scenes with entangled human flesh. Although, they altered their artworks in defiance to Renaissance norms, they were still part of the same art movement and supporters of the same ideals. Hence, today we call their style the L...

Elements Texture: is implied as we are unaware if this art is actual painting or  photograph. Color: are made-up of warm tones and shades  of red, while there is also the hint of tints for the light skin on the face. Space: The portrait represents more positive space (Joan of Arc) with very little negative space. (background) Jehanne La Pucelle also known as Joan of Arc 1412-1431  Joan of Arc a French heroine and military leader inspired by religious visions to organize French resistance to the English. She was later tried for heresy and burned at the stake. Cited:  https;//www.thefreedictionary.com  I  found this picture from a post on social media.  I do not know who the artist is, although I found it appealing reminding me of a warrior.   I would suggest this type of art would possibly be found in a musem or maybe even a gallery.
